William Clopton was born in Eastwood, Essex, England, the son of Rev. William Clopton and Elizabeth Sutcliffe. He emigrated from England to York County, Virginia before 1675.
He married Ann Booth Dennett, daughter of Dr. Robert Booth, and widow of Capt. Thomas Dennett.
