The son of Benjamin Michaux Clopton and Justina Augusta Haden, Anthony Clopton5 (Benjamin Michaux4, Anthony3, Benjamin2, Walter1, William0) was born in Tipton or Davidson County, Tennessee on July 20, 1837, before his parents moved the family to Texas in Feb 1838. A direct descendant of William Clopton, Gentleman, and Ann (Booth) Dennett Clopton, Anthony married on December 31, 1861, in Hays County, Texas, to Margaret Sophronia Mayes. She was born June 7, 1842. They had eight children:
Anthony died November 6, 1877, in Wimberley, Hays County, Texas. Some time after his death, Margaret Sophronia married a Mr. Kegins; she died in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas, on October 6, 1927.
According to a widows' Confederate Pension file, in 1862, Anthony enlisted in the Army of the Confederacy, and served for three years in Company D, Davidson's (afterward Daly's and, finally, Regsdale's) Battalion, Texas Cavalry. Records from that period show him serving in various capacities including the Quartermaster's office as clerk, Quartermaster Sergeant, and Wagon Master.
The 1870, the United States Census in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas, lists Anthony as a farmer. He also worked in his father's blacksmith shop and was a furniture maker. Anthony made for his wife a bed which is still in the possession of his descendants. He purchased 70 acres of land in Hays County, Texas, on May 4, 1877. This land was located on the west side of Cypress fork at Jacob's Well. Margaret Sophronia lived there for over fifty years, but it was sold by their children in 1933 to settle the estate after Margaret Sophronia's death.
